A relatively large number of traffic accidents occurred on the Brabantweg - Weverstraat roundabout every year. In most traffic accidents, there was a (moped) cyclist who was not given priority by a motorist. This unsafe traffic situation has led to many complaints for years and required a structural solution. Work on the construction of a bicycle tunnel near the Weverrotonde and the reconstruction of Weverstraat was carried out in 2019. The project was achieved with financial support from the Province of Limburg.
In collaboration with the Municipality of Gennep, Roelofs took care of the entire process, from design and environmental management to the implementation and realisation of the bicycle tunnel. The objective was to achieve the maximum quality within the available budget. This included opportunities in the field of innovation and circular applications. Due to the length of the tunnel, daylight in the middle was no longer possible.
One 53 centimetre diameter Solatube system was installed into the central reservation of the road which provides the middle of the bicycle tunnel with daylight. A tailor-made finish ensures that the system is vandal-resistant from below.
